Welcome to the module Introduction to Politics! This module is designed to help students of the course BA (Hons) International Relations (Extended Degree) to develop the understanding and knowledge of key political concepts, ideas and ideologies. The aim is to introduce students to what politics is, with particular emphasis towards acquiring an understanding of basic concepts such as: power, sovereignty, the social contract, security, freedom, rule of law, citizen, participation, representation, elections, political parties, democracy. The historical origins and evolution of these and other key political ideas will be discussed in class. Students will be also encouraged to reflect on how the nature of politics and the meaning of these key concepts are challenged by globalization and the digital revolution.
