In this week’s session we will introduce the fundamental concepts, considerations, and approaches to the scientific study of people. We will further focus our discussion on an overview of the different methodological approaches employed in the study of personality.

This week we will begin our discussion of the earliest approach to the formal study of personality – psychoanalysis, the creation of Sigmund Freud. Almost every personality theory developed after Freud owes debt to his initial theory. The students will learn about the basic principles of the psychodynamic approach, the concepts of the levels of consciousness, the id, ego, and superego, as well as the implications for growth and development.

In these two weeks we will discuss some of the psychological paradigms that were inspired by, or developed as a response to, Freud’s psychodynamic approach. We will discuss the approaches of Adler and Jung, and their implications for the study and understanding of personality.

In this week’s sessions we will about the life-span approach to understanding personality, represented by the work of Erik Erikson. We will learn his theory which attempts to explain human behaviour and growth through eight stages, from birth to death.

Starting with Gordon Allport, with whom the trait approach began, we will learn about motivation and personality. In the second part, we will continue with Raymond Cattell and Hans Eysenck, exploring the Five-Factor Theory, HEXACO, and the Dark Triad.

This week we will move into a discussion of learning-based approaches to the study of personality. We will discuss Pavlov’s classical conditioning approach, as well as the Behavioral approaches of Watson and Skinner, and their implications for the study and understanding of personality.
