Week 1 - Introduction to the ModuleThe first week of the module will serve as an introduction to the module. We will start by exploring students' motivations and expectations about the module. Likewise, general information and guidelines about formal and organizational aspects of the module will be provided. To conclude, a general introduction to the key concepts to be addressed throughout the module will be developed: narrative, media and stereotypes. 3 sections

Week 2&3 - Human CommunicationThis week we will start exploring Human Communication. In doing so, we will address, among other issues, the concept of communication, communication functions, communication axioms, communication components, communication types and communication models. 5 sections

Week 3 - SemioticsThis week we will be introduced to Semiotics, the study of signs, sign systems and signification. In doing so, we will also discuss topics such as representation, denotation and connotation. 3 sections

Week 4&5 - NarrativeThis week we will engage in a discussion about the basic concepts of narrative theory, by exploring the concept of narrative as an integral part of almost any kind of human communication, as well as the narrative elements and narrative types. 5 sections

Week 5&6 - CultureThese weeks we will focus on culture, and specifically on issue such as cultural patterns, layers of culture and dimensions of culture. 5 sections

Week 7 - Culture and CommunicationThis week we will focus on culture and communication, paying particular attention to intercultural communication. 4 sections
|
||||
|
Week 8 - Media and CultureThis week our discussion will focus on media and its relation to culture. In doing so, we will address topics such as types of media, evolution of media, mass media, social media, media language and media representation. 4 sections

Weeks 9&10 - Representation and Stereotypes in the MediaThese weeks... ...we will cover the key concepts and ideas related to stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice ... we will focus on representation and stereotypes in the media, by paying particular attention on how this happens in terms of: gender, age, race, ethnia, religion, social class, sexual orientation, national belonging, appearance or (dis)ability. 6 sections

Week 12 - Digital EthnographyThis week we will familiarise ourselves with the approach that they will adopt for their final assignment: digital ethnography. In doing so, we will address the difference between ethnography and digital ethnography, as well as discuss the principles of digital ethnography, with an emphasis on the process of observing digital behaviour. 3 sections

Week 13 - Social Media, Power and ManipulationThis week we will cover media manipulation, including reference to the strategies of manipulation by the media, focus on “the danger of a single story” and discussion of the concepts of fake news and post-truth. 4 sections

Week 14(1) - Media and Social ChangeThis week our discussion will focus our attention on possible strategies to move “beyond the single story”, including the reduction of prejudice and discrimination, and in connection with the process of digital/media literacy. 3 sections

Week 14(2) - Integration and Revision of the ModuleIn the fourteenth and last week of the module we will finish to integrate and review the module contents. 3 sections
